The number in the size is the chest measurement. The letter in the size included the ideal height for the wearer.
S - Shorter sleeves and shorter overall length. Ideal for man 5'7" and under
R - Average length sleeves and length. Ideal for man 5'8" - 5'11"
L = Longer sleeves and longer overall length. Ideal for man 6' and up
